Chocolateria San Churro, Linking Road, Bandra

“There’s nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate.” – Charles Dickens

The origin of chocolate dates back to 1900 BC in Mesoamerica where the Aztecs consumed chocolate in the form of fermented beverages. Chocolate gained much more popularity later in the sixteenth century after the Europeans discovered it and has been an incredibly popular food ever since! When life happens, chocolate comes to our rescue as the primary comfort food and instant mood-enhancer. It’s not surprising that  chocolate is a proven stress-buster with a wide array of other health benefits!

This restaurant with it’s charming interiors, exudes cosy and warm vibes right from the entrance; all courtesy the not-so-bright yet adequate lighting, the comfortable and well cushioned chairs surrounding the wooden tables, good music, the witty quotes on chocolate all over the place and some trivia thrown in here and there. The large counter standing tall in the centre of the lower air conditioned dining section displaying all their desserts and bakes, is undoubtedly a drool-worthy sight!

Kids Churros (INR 195)

This comprised of three, mini, thick, straight, neither too crispy nor too soft fried dough pastries, that is, churros dusted in sugar served along with a pot of melted chocolate and colourful sprinkles. While the crunchy churros weren’t anything to rave about on their own, having them right after dipping them into the chocolate and the pot of sprinkles was a delight!

Classic Spanish (INR 180)

This was their original thick Spanish hot chocolate with a strong chocolate-y aroma. A rich, warm, decadent, dark, smooth, creamy and luscious drink this was, with a deep and rich bitter-sweet flavour of chocolate! This was the CLEAR WINNER and ‘San Churro’ is evidently one of the countable few restaurants that serve the best hot chocolate in Mumbai!

Avellana (INR 190)

This hot chocolate preparation with a healthy dose of hazelnuts had a faint nutty aroma BUT was not as thick as the original one. It also revealed faint toasty notes and nutty flavour of hazelnut that came in waves, BUT it wasn’t vivid or consistent enough for me to be able to really appreciate it well.

The service is warm, welcoming and fast enough. The attendants are kind and fairly attentive with effective communication skills.

Our total bill amount including taxes came upto 565 INR PLUS TAXES. This place is surely a bit overpriced and overhyped as the quality of F&B is GOOD BUT NOTHING WOW; the only exception being the original hot chocolate which seemed worth every penny!

The Classic Spanish hot chocolate is clearly a MUST HAVE! And it’s needless to say that it’s the only thing that I’ll be back here again for!
