This legendary restaurant has been standing tall ever since it’s establishment in the year 1942 despite so many restaurants sprouting up in the city in so many years or rather decades. Ever wondered how they managed to be the heart of the city even after so many years? Well, I suppose you should stop wondering and come and experience this heavenly place for yourself to believe in it’s goodness!
As you enter in, there’s an a/c section followed by a non a/c open air dhaba styled dining area! Amazing! I strongly recommend everyone to dine in the open air to have an experience of a lifetime. The ambience is just wonderful and absolutely lively! The entire open air dining area is lit up with fancy lights. Energetic punjabi music playing in the background gets you in the perfect mood. Comfortable cots and charpai with adequate cushioning are set across large tables along with a few cosy chairs allowing a large group of people to comfortably and enjoyably dine together! Worrying about the summer heat? You absolutely don’t have to! They have air coolers and table fans installed near every table and that transports you to those airy dhabas in Punjab where wind blows through your hair while you enjoy some delicious food! December is here fellas and the weather is sure to get more cooler and pleasant, taking the outdoor dining experience to yet another level of awesomeness!
We started our meal with Chaas and Jaljeera followed by the famed KarariRoomali. For starters we had Tandoori Dingri, Chicken nawabi kebab, Chicken hariyali, Paneer Kandhari, Basa Tikka and Bharwan Aloo. For mains, we ordered the Sarson Da Saag and Butter chicken accompanied by Churra Paratha, Makke di Roti, Missi Roti and Stuffed Amritsari Kulcha. Then we had rice accompanied by Dal Makhani. After having all of this, we sincerely had no place for desserts in our eternally satisfied tummies. Yet we couldn’t resist ordering Kulfi, Gulab jamuns, Rabdi and finished our meal with a Lassi!
Coming to the food we had-
Chaas – 4.5/5
The chaas was absolutely perfect and refreshing! The spices added to it gave a soothing sensation as it trickled down my throat. Amazing!
Jaljeera – 4.5/5
Chiiled water flavoured by spices like Cumin, fennel and black pepper, tamarind and mint and garnished with boondi. Amazing yet again! A cool tangy preparation that totally refreshes you!
Karari Roomali – 4/5
A larger, crispier and dryer version of the Romaali roti dressed with abundant ghee and red chilli powder. So, crunchy that you can just go on and on losing count of how many you had.
Chicken nawabi kebab – 5/5
Boneless chicken kebabs prepared in the tandoor and seasoned with Malaithat absolutely were lip smacking delicious! The moderately spicy kebabs gave away a slight smoky flavour of the tandoor and the malai made it melt in our mouth as we took a bite! Heavenly!
Chicken hariyali- 4.5/5
Absolutely well done yet again! Spicy and full of flavours bursting into the mouth as we took a bite! The smoky flavour of the tandoor added to the spice and made it even more delectable!
Paneer Kandhari – 4/5
Melt in the mouth cottage cheese cubes dressed in a moderately spiced marinade and veggies like bell peppers, onions, etc grilled in the tandoor. Absolutely soft and flavoursome paneer that tasted rich and creamy. Well done!
Basa Tikka – 5/5
Basa fish meat cooked in a tandoor till a crispy and spiced up crust of the marinade is formed. As you take a bite into this delicious dish, you feel a slight crunch that releases a burst of flavours at the beginning followed by absolutely well cooked fish meat that melts in the mouth! This is it! This is what we live for! Yummmm!
Bharwan Aloo – 4.5/5
Thin crusted crispy rounds stuffed with cottage cheese, potatoes, spices, mawa, resins and cashews. Killer!
Tandoori Dingri (Mushrooms) –
The only dish that I couldn’t try since I’m allergic to mushrooms! So, I can’t really vouch for this one or rate it taste wise.
Churra Paratha – 4.5/5
Whole wheat Parathas cooked in ghee until crisp and then crushed. Yummy! We enjoyed them as a snack during out wait for the mains and finished it all within seconds!
Stuffed Amritsari Kulcha – 4.5/5
Kulchas stuffed with a mixture of onions, chillies, mashed potatoes and spices. Amazing again!
Makke di Roti, Missi Roti and Tandoori Roti – 4.5/5
The plain rotis, Makke Di rotis and the Missi rotis all were cooked perfectly and absolutely went well with the Butter Chicken and the Sarson Da Saag that we had ordered. No complaints!
Sarson Da Saag – 5/5
Made out of fresh ingredients and not the canned Sarson that most restaurants use, this dish is sure to tickle your taste buds and give you the heavenly and blissful feeling! I absolutely loved it! Bang on!
Butter chicken – 5/5
Absolutely yummilicious! Amazingly creamy and thick very lightly and optimally spiced up gravy with shredded and diced deboned pieces of chicken. One of the best that I have had so far!
Dal Makhani and Steamed Rice – 5/5
Absolutely well cooked dal in a creamy, moderately spicedand rich gravy. Yummmazing!! The steamed rice that we ordered to eat with the dal was equally cooked to perfection and garnished with Coriander leaves.
Kulfi – 5/5
Absolutely delicious! Now, there would be really very few who don’t like Kulfis! This one was served in a bowl cut into small bite size pieces. I totally loved this one!
Gulab jamuns – 5/5
These delicious and sweet little balls of goodness totally won our hearts and our taste buds as we took a bite! Perfect consistency of thr jamuns to slice through easily and tasted absolutely delicious!
Rabdi – 5/5
Absolutely creamy Rabdi of the perfect consistency rich in flavour and garnished with abundant nuts.No one could get enough of this lavish little treat!
Lassi – 5/5
Tasted perfect again with not too much sweetness and the perfect consistency! They simply nailed it!
